What I Learned from Manny Pacquiao
By Mike | January 7, 2009

Manny Pacquiao, the world renknowned Filipino boxer and currently WBC Lightweight Champion, is a man with a very encouraging success story. A story which I believe can be applied by anyone to anything that needs success. In our case, we’re going to apply Manny’s success story to business.
I was able to watch a brief autobiography of Manny Pacquiao on TV and there I gathered the following information:
- He gained a total of 33 Million US Dollars just by winning boxing matches
- He gives to charity and helps aspiring boxers reach for their dreams
- He didn’t win all of his fights
- There was a time in his life when he thought of quitting
- Despite the fact that he thought of quitting in the past, he still has never quit
- He started small
- He wasn’t wealthy to begin with. Actually he grew up in a family so poor they had to share with what little food they have to survive.
Based on these seven points, I came up with the following:
Poverty is NOT a Stumbling Block
Many people complain about how poor they are saying that if only they had money, they will be rich. The problem with this kind of thinking is that they want money to make money. While it is true that having a good financial investment is better than having none, one must always remember that money is not the only possible investment. One can invest time, effort and ideas. In Manny’s story, he didn’t think of poverty as a stumbling block, rather he made it his driving force. He wanted to get out of it so badly he left his family without telling his mom and went to Manila, a place he had no idea of. It was there that he had he won his first boxing match.
Dream Big, Start Small
If I had a million dollars, I can easily turn it to 2 million dollars. OR Could I? I’ve seen many people gain lots of money only to lose all of it and suffer from poverty in the end. A big dream can always be attained by starting small. Manny didn’t start a champion. Rather, he started as a nobody. A nobody with a dream to pull his family out of poverty. He held on to his dreams so tight that he’ll do whatever it takes to turn it into reality.
Failure is NOT a reason for quitting
Many aspiring businessmen fail to start with anything because they can’t get past their fear of failing. They worry that “it might not work.” This I think is the very reason why not all people are businessmen. As for those who manage to get past their fear of failure, a larger chunk ends up quitting after encountering their first few failures. Manny Pacquiao has had failures in his boxing career. He wasn’t always a winner. He once lost so badly that he went back to being a construction worker, leaving his dreams behind – for a while. Eventually he came back with greater resolve in turning his dreams to something tangible. He didn’t quit and look at what he is now.
Greediness is NEVER Good
Don’t aspire to be wealthy so you can have some awesome vacation house in the Carribean. No, it’s not bad to have such a house but if that’s your driving force then you’ll fail miserably. Don’t be greedy. Don’t think of just yourself. Instead think of the people around you who will benefit from your success. Think of helping others. After all, you’ll never be wealthy if there are no other people in this world. It is them who will make you rich so it is just fair that they benefit from your success.
Manny Pacquiao thought of his family. He wanted to get them out of poverty – a very strong driving force behind his success. His generosity soon expanded to other people. He gives to charity, gives food (and some money) to the poor, he helps cancer patients and most of all he helps aspiring boxers to become like him.
Success Comes in the End
No one I know of have reached their full success in the beginning. Success is always in the end because success equates to reaching your goal. It is the realization of your dreams. Manny didn’t get out of poverty after his first winning match. He was still a nobody when he first won but he was at least a step closer to realizing his dreams. He had to go through many fights bringing him victories, failures and bruises. Sure it was risky but he wouldn’t have been what he is today if he didn’t take the risk. Eventually he became wealthy and pulled his family out of poverty. It was only in the end that he became what he is now, loved by many even by his opponents.
In Conclusion
A successful business is just like a successful boxing career. You start small, experience failures but never quit, reach on for your dreams, and eventually get it.
